Quick answer: PBT over ABS for durability, pick a profile you like (cherry/OEM to start), and match the set to your exact layout and sizes.
Keycaps change how a keyboard looks, sounds and feels. For small rooms, material and profile matter more than colourway.

PBT vs ABS
ABS is cheaper and smoother but shines with use; PBT is more textured and resists the greasy shine. For small rooms who type a lot, PBT is the more durable choice.
Profile and Sound
Profile is the shape and height of the caps. Taller profiles sound and feel different from low ones; cherry and OEM are the common, safe starting points before you develop a preference.
Match the Layout Exactly
Count your rows and note the special keys — a 60% set will not fit a board with a function row or arrows. Check for the right modifiers (shift, enter, spacebar) before buying.
Frequently asked questions
Are expensive keycap sets worth it?
For feel and sound, a good set is a genuine upgrade and cheaper than a new board. Artisan and rare sets carry a premium beyond the material — buy for the typing, not the collectability.
Can I mix keycap brands on one board?
Usually yes, as long as they share the stem (MX-style is near-universal) and the profile is compatible. Mixing profiles feels odd, so keep one profile per board.
How do I know which layout for small rooms?
Photograph your keyboard and count the rows and keys, then match the set. Full-size, TKL and 60% are the common layouts; the set must list yours.
The bottom line
For small rooms, PBT durability, a profile you like and an exact layout match matter most. Colour is the last thing to choose.
