Quick answer: Prefer a wired ethernet connection, use a 5GHz Wi-Fi channel if you must go wireless, and stop background downloads before you play.
Lag spikes and rubber-banding ruin more games than low frames. For pure gaming rigs, a stable connection beats a fast-but-jittery one every time.

Wired Beats Wireless
Ethernet removes the variable that causes most home lag spikes — shared airtime. If a cable is not possible, sit close to the router on a clean 5GHz channel.
Stop the Bandwidth Thieves
Cloud sync, game updates and 4K streams on other devices cause the spikes you feel mid-match. Pause them before competitive sessions; the average speed matters less than the consistency.
Pick a Sensible Server
For pure gaming rigs, the closest server usually gives the lowest ping. If it is crowded or unstable, the next-closest region is often smoother than a packed nearby one.
Frequently asked questions
Is my ping or my packet loss the problem?
Packet loss and jitter cause the stutter and rubber-banding; ping is just delay. If you teleport rather than lag smoothly, look at loss and Wi-Fi interference first.
Does a gaming router help for pure gaming rigs?
Only if your current one is the bottleneck. QoS that prioritises the gaming device helps on a busy network; a new router rarely fixes a bad connection from the ISP.
Should I use a VPN for gaming?
Usually no — it adds a hop and latency. Only use one to reach a specific region or if your ISP throttles; otherwise it trades stability for little benefit.
The bottom line
For pure gaming rigs, stability is the whole game. Go wired, kill background traffic, and pick the closest healthy server.
