Quick answer: Linear is smooth and quiet (favoured by gamers); tactile has a bump (favoured by typists); clicky adds sound (polarising in shared spaces).
The switch is the single biggest factor in how a keyboard feels. For premium setups, the choice comes down to smooth, bumpy or loud.

Linear: Smooth and Quiet
Linear switches go straight down with no bump or click. They are smooth, fast and quiet, which is why most competitive gamers prefer them.
Tactile: A Felt Bump
Tactile switches have a noticeable bump partway down, which many typists find satisfying and precise. They are a middle ground — feedback without much noise.
Clicky: Audible Feedback
Clicky switches add a sharp click. They are divisive: some love the feedback, others find them too loud for a shared room or a call. For premium setups in a shared space, they are risky.
Frequently asked questions
Which switch is best for gaming?
Most competitive players choose linear — smooth, fast and quiet. But comfort and consistency matter more than the type, so pick what feels right in your hands.
Which switch is best for typing?
Many typists prefer tactile for the feedback, but plenty type happily on linear. If you share a room, avoid clicky regardless of preference.
Can premium setups change switches later?
On a hot-swap board, yes — swap switches without soldering. On a soldered board, it means desoldering, so choose a hot-swap board if you want to experiment.
The bottom line
For premium setups, try before you commit. Linear for smooth and quiet, tactile for feedback, clicky only if you love the sound and have the room.
