Quick answer: A gas-spring arm floats the monitor and frees the most space; a low riser stand is the cheap fix if you only need a little height.
The stock monitor stand eats desk depth you could use for the keyboard and mouse. For compact desks, an arm or a low stand reclaims that space and improves posture.

When an Arm Wins
If your desk is shallow or you want the monitor closer, a gas-spring arm removes the entire stand footprint and lets you position the screen precisely. It is the bigger upgrade.
When a Stand Is Enough
If the monitor is already at a decent height and you just want a little clearance underneath for storage, a riser stand is cheaper and simpler than an arm.
Check the Mount First
Confirm your monitor has a VESA mount (four screw holes on the back) before buying an arm. Most do; some ultra-thin or all-in-one models need an adapter.
Frequently asked questions
Will a monitor arm hold a heavy monitor?
Most arms are rated for a weight range printed on the box. Check your monitor’s weight (without the stand) against that range before buying.
Arm or stand for compact desks?
An arm if you want maximum desk space and precise positioning; a stand if you want a cheap, simple lift and some under-desk storage.
Does a monitor arm help posture?
Yes — it lets you set the top of the screen at eye level and push it back, which is hard to do with many fixed stands.
The bottom line
For compact desks, reclaiming the stand’s footprint is one of the highest-value setup changes. An arm if you can, a riser if you cannot.
