Quick answer: Match the rest’s height to your keyboard, prefer a firm non-memory surface, and keep wrists neutral — not bent up or down.
A wrist rest helps only if it keeps your wrists straight. For budget setups, the wrong height can make posture worse, not better.

Height Matching
The rest should bring your wrists level with the keys, not above or below. A rest that is too tall bends the wrists upward, which is worse than no rest at all.
Material and Feel
A firm surface supports the palm without sinking; overly soft memory foam collapses and lets the wrists drop. For budget setups, a medium-firm rest with a wipeable cover lasts longer.
Rest vs Technique
A rest supports the palms between typing, not during it. For budget setups, the real fix for ache is keyboard height and neutral wrists — the rest is a comfort aid, not a cure.
Frequently asked questions
Do wrist rests prevent strain?
They can reduce pressure if they keep wrists neutral, but they do not fix a keyboard that is too high. Treat them as comfort, and fix posture first.
Wood, foam or gel for budget setups?
Wood is firm and cool; medium foam balances support and give; gel is soft and can sink. Most people are happiest with a firm foam or wood rest.
Full-length or keyboard-only rest?
A full-length rest supports both palms evenly; a keyboard-only rest leaves the mouse hand unsupported. Match it to how you actually sit and type.
The bottom line
For budget setups, a wrist rest works only at the right height with neutral wrists. Fix the keyboard height first, then add a firm rest.
