Quick answer: Low-sensitivity players need an extended pad or desk mat; high-sensitivity players are fine on a smaller pad. Stitched edges and a rubber base are the quality markers.
The difference is size, and size decides how you aim. For large desks, matching the surface to your sensitivity is the whole decision.

Match Size to Sensitivity
If you swipe far to turn, you need a large surface — an extended pad or a full desk mat. If you aim with small movements, a standard pad keeps the desk tidier.
Cloth or Hard
Cloth gives more control and a smoother glide and is the default for most players. Hard mats are faster and better for stopping precisely, but louder and harder on mouse feet.
Check Edges and Base
Stitched edges stop fraying and a rubber base stops the pad sliding mid-flick. For large desks, these two details separate a mat that lasts from one that curls and drifts.
Frequently asked questions
Does a bigger mousepad make me more accurate?
Not directly, but it lets you use a lower sensitivity without lifting the mouse, and that consistency tends to improve aim over time.
Speed or control surface for large desks?
Control (cloth) suits most players and lower sensitivities. Speed (hard) suits fast flicks and higher sensitivities. Try a cloth mat first — it is the safer default.
How thick should a desk mat be?
Around 3–5mm is comfortable for most. Too thin and it slips and feels hard; too thick and it can feel spongy under fast movements.
The bottom line
For large desks, choose the surface by sensitivity, then by feel. Size it to your swipe and buy stitched edges and a real base.
