Quick answer: Get the mic close and off the desk, light your face before your background, and frame the camera at eye level. Audio beats video every time.
A streaming desk is a normal setup plus three things done well: a framed camera, a close mic, and light on your face. For streaming setups, audio matters most.
- Audio First
- Light Your Face
- Frame the Camera
Audio First
A USB mic on a boom arm, positioned close to your mouth, is the practical default. The arm removes desk thump and lets you set distance — and distance is most of what makes a mic sound good.
Light Your Face
A key light in front of you (a ring light or a soft panel) does more than any background decoration. Keep it off to the side and slightly above to avoid flat, glare-y light.
Frame the Camera
Put the webcam at eye level so you are not looking up or down at it. A small stand or mount fixes the dreaded low-angle laptop shot instantly.
Frequently asked questions
USB or XLR microphone for streaming setups
USB is simpler and needs no interface — best for most streamers starting out. XLR needs an audio interface but gives more upgrade room and often better noise rejection.
Do I need a green screen?
Not to start. Good lighting on you and a tidy background beat a green screen that is badly lit. Add one later if you want virtual backgrounds.
How important is a second monitor for streaming?
Very. One screen for the game, one for chat and the dashboard, is far less stressful than alt-tabbing mid-stream.
The bottom line
For streaming setups, nail the mic and the key light first. Viewers forgive a soft image but leave when the audio is bad.
