Quick answer: Light behind the monitor (bias), across the wall (backlight), and under the desk (glow). Never point a strip at your eyes or the screen.
RGB earns its keep when it is placed where it reduces strain and adds mood without competing with the screen. For minimalist setups, placement beats brightness.
- Bias Lighting Behind the Monitor
- Wall Backlight
- Under-Desk and Accent Glow
Bias Lighting Behind the Monitor
A strip on the back of the monitor softens the contrast between a bright screen and a dark room, which reduces eye strain. This is the single most useful placement.
Wall Backlight
A strip aimed at the wall behind the desk washes the room in colour without glare. Keep it dim and diffuse — you want a glow, not a spotlight.
Under-Desk and Accent Glow
Under-desk strips add atmosphere you rarely look at directly. Two or three colours read as intentional; a fast rainbow cycle reads as a toy.
Frequently asked questions
Can RGB lighting cause eye strain?
Only if it is in your field of view or too bright. Keep strips out of sight lines, dim them, and match colour temperature to the time of day.
Do I need a controller or app?
A basic remote or the strip’s own app is enough for minimalist setups. You do not need a smart-home hub unless you want the lights to sync with games or music.
How many colours should I use?
Two or three from one family reads as designed. Cooler in the morning, warmer at night is a simple rule that keeps the room comfortable.
The bottom line
For minimalist setups, RGB is about reducing strain and setting mood. Place it behind and around the desk, keep it dim, and never in your eyes.
