Quick answer: A 1000Hz polling rate reports every millisecond; a shorter actuation point registers sooner. Match both to how you play, not to the spec sheet.
Two numbers decide how a keyboard feels in fast play: how often it reports, and how far a key travels before it registers. For pure gaming rigs, both are worth understanding.

Polling Rate Explained
Polling rate is how many times per second the keyboard tells the PC its state. 1000Hz (every 1ms) is standard for gaming; 8000Hz boards exist but the felt difference over 1000Hz is small.
Actuation and Travel
Actuation is the depth at which a key registers. A shorter actuation point feels twitchier and faster; rapid-trigger switches reset on release, which suits tapping styles.
What Actually Matters
For pure gaming rigs, consistency beats extremes. A reliable 1000Hz board with switches you like outperforms a headline 8000Hz board with a feel you dislike.
Frequently asked questions
Is 8000Hz worth it over 1000Hz?
The difference is fractions of a millisecond and mostly theoretical for most players. Spend on switches and build quality before chasing polling rate.
Do analog or rapid-trigger switches help?
They can, for specific styles — rapid-trigger suits quick tap-and-release inputs. If you hold keys or type a lot, a standard switch is often more comfortable.
Does polling rate affect typing?
Not noticeably for normal typing. It matters most in fast, repetitive competitive inputs where every millisecond of reporting counts.
The bottom line
For pure gaming rigs, 1000Hz and a switch feel you like is the sweet spot. Treat higher polling and exotic actuation as optional refinements.
