Quick answer: Check your monitor’s weight and VESA mount, decide between a fixed riser and an adjustable arm, and measure the desk depth it will occupy.
A stand or riser sets your monitor height and frees desk space. For compact desks, the right one fixes posture and storage at the same time.

Weight and VESA Compatibility
Confirm the stand’s weight rating covers your monitor (without its own stand) and that it has a standard VESA mount. Mismatched VESA is the most common reason a purchase gets returned.
Fixed Riser vs Adjustable Arm
A riser lifts the monitor and adds under-desk storage; an arm floats it and reclaims the most space with adjustable height and reach. Pick based on whether you need to change position.
Material and Stability
Metal or thick engineered wood stays rigid; thin plastic wobbles. For compact desks, a stand that shakes when you type is worse than the factory one it replaced.
Frequently asked questions
Riser or monitor arm for compact desks?
A riser if you want storage underneath and a simple lift; an arm if you want to reclaim the stand’s footprint and adjust height and distance freely.
Will a stand fit my monitor?
Check weight and VESA hole pattern (usually 75×75 or 100×100mm). Most monitors have VESA; some ultra-thin or all-in-one models need an adapter.
Does a stand improve ergonomics?
Yes, if it raises the screen to eye level. Pair it with a chair set so your forearms are level with the desk for the full benefit.
The bottom line
For compact desks, match weight and VESA first, then choose riser for storage or arm for space. Stability matters more than looks.
